I have a sweet tooth… a really, really big sweet tooth that can actually be a problem sometimes. I can stay on track with my nutrition goals all day long, but the second you put anything sweet in front of me… it becomes tough. I could easily eat an entire pint of ice cream, or a bar of dark chocolate. There is just something about dessert that I can’t resist.
I know I’m not alone here… I can’t tell you how many times people have told me how their sweet tooth kills their diet and sets them back with their nutrition goals. I won’t lie- I indulge in my favorite desserts every once in a while… and I don’t ever regret it one bit! BUT- I have goals I’m working on for my health and fitness… and sitting down with Ben n Jerry every night would only deter me from getting where I want to be. I thought I’d share with you my favorite alternatives for ice cream, brownies, and cookies. That way we can all stay on track… while satisfying those sweet tooth cravings!
Ice Cream Alternative: Last summer we purchased a Swirlio Frozen Fruit Dessert Maker which has made it easy to stay away from ice cream. This machine makes a quick and easy dessert in under 10 minutes! All you have to do is add in frozen fruit.. and ta-da – you’re done! The consistency of the dessert is similar to frozen yogurt but if you want it more like ice cream you can just put it back in the freezer for a half hour or so. The best part about it is that you can make all kinds of flavors… You can stick with plain fruit, or throw in add-ins like chopped dark chocolate or nuts. So far our favorite ‘flavors’ were banana with chopped dark chocolate and walnuts along with a Mango Strawberry Sorbet – yummy!!
Brownie Alternative: Brownies are the best.. chocolate-y, fudge-y deliciousness wrapped up in a little square. They’re one of my favorite desserts, and they’re also pretty easy to ‘health-ify’. My favorite Clean Eating Brownie Recipe is from The Gracious Pantry. My own Blackbean Brownies are pretty yummy, and my recipe for Clean Eating Brownie- in-a-Mug is perfect for one.
Cookie Alternative: I love my ice cream and my brownies, but nothing can take the place of a cookie! You probably all grew up with a favorite cookie- I have so many favorites it is hard to choose just one. I’m blessed to be a part of a family full of great bakers who make some really delicious treats. I even have a few healthy cookie recipes of my own like Pumpkin Dark Chocolate Chunk Cookies, Healthy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, and Dark Chocolate Espresso Paleo Cookies.
Believe me I love baking, and coming up with new recipes but I also love finding products I can just enjoy and not have to make on my own. So when I found Rickaroons it was like hitting the jackpot. I wrote a short review of them in my Paleo Dessert RoundUp Post at the beginning of the year.. but since then my love for them has only grown (and by grown I mean turned into a slight addiction). They’re basically a cookie… but they’re healthy.
They’re organic, soy/gluten-free, vegan AND paleo. Oh and did I mention that they also taste RIDICULOUSLY good? Cause’ they do. Rickaroons come in 4 different flavors – Chocolate Blonde, Mint to Be, Megaroon, and Mocha. Mocha is obviously my favorite.. dark chocolate and coffee… together… in a cookie? Yes please. Megaroon’s are my second fav – they’re packed with chia seeds and cacao nibs. Chocolate Blonde and Mint to Be are also delicious.
The best part of Rickaroons is that they are a cookie… but they’re not really a ‘cookie’ in the way most people think of cookies. Cookies are usually reserved for dessert only, or as a treat. Rickaroons can be eaten ANY time of day.
For example:
Weekend Treat on the Beach
Afternoon Coffee Break
Morning Snack on the Go.
The cookies are filling enough that they can act as a snack. They’re sweet enough that they can be considered dessert. They’re light enough that you can eat them before a workout for a little bit of energy. Most importantly – they’re so darn delicious that once you try them you’ll never want to stop eating them! Which you can do once you order them for 15% off with coupon code ‘cleaneating’ ;)
